MEET THE ARTIST: spencer ezell
artist story: though hundreds of fans already appreciate his most recent endeavors as frontman for nashville’s local rock sensation generation down, spencer ezell has decided to take the leap forward in his career in which he believes will become the biggest success. “i have reached the point in my life where i have to stop and decide what direction my music, career and dream is headed and this is the real deal….this is what makes me really feel good about what i’m doing”, spencer said. after the passing of his father in 2001, spencer, then 18 years of age, decided to put his talent of singer/songwriter to use and began playing acoustically at a small bookstore’s open mic night in martin tennessee, not far from his hometown of greenfield. the regulars quickly took a liking to him and suggested he do more with his talent. after posting a flyer at a local music shop requesting the formation of a band, he was welcomed with open arms to what soon would be known as the power rock group, cold shoulder. from 2001-2003, spencer and cold shoulder hustled gigs around their home base of west tennessee along with a few radio credits and interviews. spencer soon became the most talked about singer and performer of that scene. in early 2005, shortly after becoming 1 out of 6 finalist in a vocalist competition in orlando florida, he had decided it was finally time to leave the small town life, friends and family he held so dear to relocate to a market that would contain much more opportunity. starting out in nashville not knowing anyone was rough, but spencer used most of his first year in nashville playing numerous spots at the world famous bluebird café and was consistently receiving thunderous applause and recognition with his many visits. in the wake of 2006, spencer joined up with generation down taking the nashville scene on as vocalist/guitarist and soon with the addition of another band member, he seated himself as front man to what would become his finest accomplishment yet. generation down in less than a year conquered the nashville rock market along with touring regionally with an edgy, yet melodic sound that’s uniqueness could not be duplicated. local radio station 102.9 the buzz awarded them the local buzz hall of fame for being the most requested band on the local show 3 months running. their debut album released independently, “reality crisis”, saw large sales online and at their energetic live shows with such fan favorites as, “drowning eyes”, “tomorrow again”, “one more day”, and “shade of gray”. by the end of 2007, editorials on nashvillerock.net were constantly praising spencer and generation down for being at the top of the game in the local rock scene. approaching 2008 with recording projects underway for generation down’s follow up album to “reality crisis”, and the loss of their management, the pressure from his peers to conform to a certain style and genre of music along with scheduling conflicts and creative differences began to take it’s toll on spencer. with the undying support of the people that cared for him most behind him, spencer made the decision to start doing things his way. “i listen to good music, i write good music and i want to perform good music; it is that simple”, spencer exclaims. “both bands i’ve been in throughout my career have really helped me get to this point and we have all been good friends and even at sometimes like brothers, but now i think i’m finally ready to get out on my own and show the world what is really in my heart and soul”. “after much trial and error, and a lot of praying on the subject, i have come to the understanding that i’m not a head banging, emo screaming rocker, nor do i have a twang in my voice and wear cowboy boots”. “i am spencer ezell and this is my calling and what i love and was meant to do…and i have to say, i’m proud of that”.
